Homeowner’s Renovation Checklist: When Should I Paint?
When you are planning a renovation of your home, there are many decisions to be made. One of the most important questions that you need to answer is when should I paint?
This is quite important because painting at the wrong time may not only add time to your renovation, but unneeded expense as well. Answering the question of when painting should occur will help you better plan out your renovation efforts.
Best Time to Paint
It can be quite tempting to select the color scheme of your home that will be renovated and then start to purchase the paint and work on some areas of the house. However, this can be a big mistake depending on the type of renovation that you are trying to accomplish.
A renovation that involves some type of demolition and construction work, such as adding new walls, pipes, electrical conduits, and the like means that painting early is a bad idea.
- Electrical Installation
- New Drywall
- Plumbing
- Structural Changes to the Home
Such additions means that workers will be coming in and out of your home. So, even if you are planning on painting areas that are away from the main renovation, it is still not a great idea to start until all the main work is accomplished.
Why Waiting is Best?
The question of when should I paint can be answered with the simple phrase, ‘when all structural work is done’. This means that once the renovation reaches a point where you can bring in the furniture, that is when you should paint. It means that all structural work has been accomplished. Because there are good reasons to wait.
Dust: Even if you paint in other areas of the home first, the dust generated by the remodeling work can float in the air and settle on the wet paint. This means that once it has dried, you will see the dust and dirt kicked up by the renovation on your new paint. This may require you to repaint the area which wastes time, money, and effort.
Focus: Each step of a renovation needs to have your full attention. This means from the start through the completion you should limit virtually all work towards the completion of each step. That way, you can fully evaluate whether you are ready to take the next step.
Dividing your attention by painting early may mean missing an important aspect of your renovation. This distraction may lead to having to replace or add something new which only disrupts your painting effort.
Evaluation: You may have your color scheme all picked out before the renovation but before you start painting, you’ll want to see the final results first. You may decide that the color scheme you have chosen does not work. The last thing you want is to paint the wrong color and have to paint it again. So, evaluate the final result before you start painting.
Answering the question of when should I paint starts with the assessment of your renovation effort. It does not take much in the way of planning, but you should hold off on painting until after you have completed all the structural work, but before you move in any items.
